William B. McAllister, Ph.D.
William B. McAllister earned his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia in 1996, concentrating on modern European, Diplomatic, and international history. He subsequently taught at the University of Virginia. Dr. McAllister joined the staff at the Office of the Historian, Department of State in 2003. He produced volumes of the Foreign Relations of the United States series dealing with Global Issues topics. During 2009-2010 Dr. McAllister also served as Acting General Editor of the series. In his current capacity as Special Projects Division chief, he oversees a variety of initiatives to promote historical understanding, including briefing newly-appointed U.S. ambassadors about the history of the countries to which they are accredited, teaching Foreign Service Officers about U.S. diplomatic history, conducting in-depth, historically informed policy studies for Department officials, outreach to the general public concerning topics of historical importance, and a major research program to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Foreign Relations of the United States series.
